This bottle was inspired by the ‘shaft and globe’ shape of early English wine bottles. These spherical bottles were prevalent in the mid-17th century and were mouth-blown rather than made in moulds.
By this time, English bottles were made using coal fuel, which generated higher temperatures than earlier wood-burning furnaces. This produced stronger bottles with thicker sides, which could be used for storage as well as simply as serving vessels. In the second half of the 17th century, the ‘shaft and globe’ bottle gradually evolved into the ‘onion’ bottle, in use around the time of Taylor’s foundation in 1692, whose neck was shorter and body more squat in shape.
Taylor's Historical Collection IV - The Globe is a superb dessert wine, pairing beautifully with the flavours of almonds, berries, or dark chocolate. It also complements rich, blue veined cheeses wonderfully. Ideal at the conclusion of a meal, it serves as the perfect finale to a delightful evening, whether enjoyed on its own or alongside a plate of walnuts or roasted almonds
